Whether your motivation stems from concerns about climate change or you’ve had enough of the sticker shock at the gas pump, electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as the pioneers of a sustainable revolution in the world of transportation. With never-ending advancements in technology, it’s clear EVs are here to stay.
As someone who has been supporting customers with EV chargers since 2019, I am familiar with the common concerns people have while deciding to go electric. Here are some of the topics I discuss with my customers during their decision-making process.
What are the different types of EV Chargers?
EV chargers come in various types, catering to different needs and charging speeds:
Level 1 Chargers: These chargers use a standard household outlet (120 volts) and are suitable for overnight charging at home. They provide a range of 2 to 5 miles of driving per hour of charging.
Level 2 Chargers: Installed at home or public charging stations, these chargers use 240-volt outlets. They offer a faster charging rate, providing around 10 to 60 miles of range per hour of charging, depending on the vehicle and charger specifications. Several customers take into consideration the number of future drivers in their household.
DC Fast Chargers: These high-powered chargers, often found along highways and in commercial areas, use direct current (DC) to provide rapid charging, allowing drivers to gain significant mileage in a short time period.
What Are the Benefits of EV Chargers?
Environmentally Friendly: EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Cost Savings: Charging an EV is usually cheaper than fueling a traditional vehicle with gasoline, leading to significant long-term savings.
Convenience: With a home charging station, EV owners can conveniently charge their vehicles overnight, ensuring a full battery each morning.
Incentives & Rebates: New York State has been at the forefront of promoting EV adoption through various incentives and laws, encouraging residents to make the switch to electric vehicles.
Does New York State Incentivize EV Owners?
EV Charging Station Installation Incentive:
NYS offers incentives to property owners and businesses who install EV charging stations. These incentives help cover the costs associated with purchasing and installing charging equipment, making it more accessible for both consumers and businesses. NYS homeowners who install qualified EV charging equipment, may receive a tax credit of 30% of the cost, up to $1,000. Also, the EV charger tax credit for business and home installations applies to other EV charger equipment like bidirectional (i.e., two-way) chargers.
Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Tax Credits:
NYS provides tax credits to individuals and businesses purchasing zero-emission vehicles, including electric cars. The Charge NY initiative can significantly reduce the overall cost of purchasing an EV.
Public Charging Infrastructure:
NYS is actively working on expanding its public charging infrastructure. This initiative aims to ensure that EV owners have access to charging stations not only in urban areas but also along highways and in rural communities, promoting safe long-distance EV travel.
Incentives for EV Manufacturers:
To encourage the manufacturing and sale of electric vehicles, NYS also offers incentives to automakers. These incentives promote the production of eco-friendly vehicles, contributing to a cleaner environment.
Looking Ahead: The Future of EV Chargers in NYS
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, NYS will likely introduce more initiatives to support EV adoption.
